The Parental Pad

We are tackling another renovation - bringing our renovation total to 13 houses! This time around we are transforming the minor dwelling situated on our property, affectionately known as The Parental Pad. This particular renovation holds a unique twist as the property is co-owned with Alice's parents, Brian and Shona Goldsbury, who own a share of the property and reside in the minor dwelling. As we embark on the renovation journey, consensus must be reached on various aspects and we will be embracing an intergenerational living that brings along its own set of advantages and obstacles.

Our design brief tasks us with steering clear of white hues and instead, embracing a vivid colour palette inspired by the great outdoors, all while incorporating a striking retro colour scheme. We aim to add vibrant green to new kitchen, seamlessly integrating ample storage solutions. To add personality, we plan to incorporate a variety of patterns and wallpaper selections. Opting for durable, low-maintenance materials is key to cater to the lifestyle needs of the homeowners and their cherished pet, all while ensuring that the breathtaking views take center stage in the redesign. Sounds straightforward, right?

Meet the Parentals - AKA Alice’s Parents

Brian Goldsbury - A Kiwi-Dad, ultimate handyman, avid fisherman, enthusiastic and known for his impulse purchases and projects. “She’ll be right” approach to life. Retired, ready to get stuck into the project and resident groundsman.

Shona Goldsbury - Used to city life and working 9-5pm, the most reluctant to make the lifestyle change to the coast and downsize her home. Always the first to ask - "How much will that cost?". She loves loud colours and is all about storage.

The Design Brief and Style Inspiration

  • Avoid white and embrace colour that reflects the outdoors but also with a bold retro-inspired colour scheme.

  • Create storage wherever possible.

  • Upgrade the kitchen. Green kitchen cabinets and add more features to make the space as functional as possible.
